Is the expansion tank the same as the buffer tank?

The expansion tank provides head pressure to a circulation pump while a buffer tank helps prevent short cycling and adds volume to the system.

What are the two types of buffer tanks?

Buffer tanks are mainly divided into two types, the “Hot Water Buffer Tanks” and “Chilled Water Buffer Tanks”.

Working Principle 

The buffer tank’s primary function is to decrease cycling heat. Other than that, its other operation is for thermal energy storage. This tank can hold enough heated water and runs it through the hydronic system. 

As a thermal energy storage, it is possible since they used the tank to generate heating. This heat is usable for later usage. Additionally, the buffer tank’s efficiency in storing enables balanced cycling requirements for alternate turns. The process of reducing the cycling frequency cuts regular costs.
